Empire Records

Empire Records is a film set in the post-Cobain mid '90s. While Grunge was still influencing the style at the time, it was on a slow decline. Throughout the film, we see the mix of Grunge (plaid print, combat boots and slouchy denim) and girly (miniskirts, cropped jumpers and bralets). For this post, I will be styling looks inspired by Corey, Gina and Deb.

Starting with Corey (Liv Tyler), who I would say has the most iconic style of the film. We only see her wearing the one outfit - a fuzzy blue jumper, plaid mini kilt and chunky boots. I would then style a pendant necklace, mini backpack and a watch to complete the look. You can also recreate the look to suit your favourite colours - I would totally choose baby pink jumper and Burberry print skirt!

"[Liv Tyler's] schoolgirl kilt with cropped mohair jumper and heavy man boots just looks perfect. I love the proportions, I love how it is childish but also deliberately alluring." - Alexa Chung, It

Moving onto Gina. Gina's style was quite similar to Coreys, but more provocative, and less boyish (and innocent!). Gina wore a cropped cardigan, showing a flash of her bra, and paired it with an ultra-mini skirt, and heeled clogs. I have styled a lace-up tank top with my miniskirt, layered necklaces, and chunky platform sandals for a similar look.

Last but not least, Deb. Deb's style was the complete opposite of Corey and Gina, and stuck to wearing baggy jeans, hoodies, chains and ripped clothes. To create her look, key pieces would be a cut-up band t-shirt, distressed jeans (I have styled ripped denim shorts instead- a frayed denim skirt could also work), doc marten boots, and a shirt around the waist. Don't forget headphones around your neck!

Who's style do you relate to most?
