The Real '20s: Part 1
I've been thinking about this new type of article for a while now, and I've finally decided. I'll be, aside from talking about plants, royalty and astronomy, (altough I didn't do a post on it yet) talking about historical fashion. Many people here address modern fashion, but what about the past? We mustn't forget it.
So for this series, I'll start with the REAL '20s, but first, let me demystify something. It is a common minsconception that in the '20s women wore only fringy dresses, long pearl necklaces, feathery headbands and got rid of corsets. Well, that's not really true. Corsets changed: they became longer, reaching the thighs and had no longer the purpose of accentuating the curves bur rather, to flatten the body. A long, shapeless body was now the trend. Today I'll be sharing some outfits based on what a first class woman would wear.
During the day, it was common to wear loose shirts with skirts or dresses that could go as low as the ankle or up, but never above the knee. Long coats would be worn with longer dresses, and would never be removed in public. A hat was always required while going for a town stroll. Under all that, stockings were worn, and then a long chemise, under the corset. Fabrics were now more simpler, leaving the detailing to the coat, should they have one. The colors where usually matte. Jewels would be minimal, saving the grand and fancy-wear for the evenings. Women did wear pearl necklaces, since they were considered the perfect jewel for a proper, respectable woman.
