Boring Grown-Up Stuff: Careers
This time on Boring Grown-Up Stuff - choosing a career!
Do you know what you want to be when you grow up? I didn't for the longest time. I thought of every career imaginable, but I could never decide which one was best. So if you're not certain what job you want in the future, don't worry! You might not have heard of it, or it might not even exist yet! It's important to do research and talk to people with jobs you think you might like, so you can get an idea of what's right for you.
So, how do you decide on a career? You'll need to look at your skills, academics, and preferences.
Skills are what you're good at, and not just sports or arts. It's your personality! Are you patient? Do you work well under pressure? Are you good at fixing things?
Academics are all about school. Being a doctor takes high grades and a lot of schooling, so would it be worth it for you? Ask yourself how long you want to go to school for your career, and what pathway suits your learning style.
Preferences are what you enjoy. Look at your hobbies, and the things you do for fun. Could you get paid for any of these things and make them your livelihood? Think about your dislikes, too, you don't want many of those in your career!
The career you choose has to line up with all three of these things. For example, I considered being a nurse, but it's very hard to get into nursing school (academics) and I don't like needles and things like that (preferences).
It can take time to figure out what you want to do, and don't rush it! It's a big decision that can affect the rest of your life!
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Til next time!
