Today I will be talking about the festival of Halloween, it is my favorite time of the year and as soon as it ends, i look forward to next years! Halloween has many origins and meanings, it is celebrated on the 31st of October. In America, the UK and most parts of the Western world it is simply a time where people dress up as monsters and ghouls, have parties and go trick or treating, but it’s roots are deeper than that. It originates from the pagan and celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced Sow-When) which is traditionally said to be the time where the veil between the living and the dead is at it’s thinnest, people put lanterns outside their houses as they believed this would guide dead relatives back home, which then it evolved into people who were scared of these spirits they thought were out there making jack-o-lanterns to scare any evil ones away. It also has an origin in Christianity (which is a Christian interpretation of Samhain) St Hallows Eve where spirits are said to walk the earth, so people wore masks to avoid being recognised by spirits of the dead that they didn’t really want to be recognised by - which is where dressing up originally comes from!

Whilst we're on the subject of dressing up, lots of people get stuck on what to wear each year - here are some ideas! Think of your favorite film or character, dress up as them, for example Captain Jack Sparrow, or The Corpse Bride. You could also dress up as your favorite celebrity or musician, this works best if the person is well recognised and has a widly known specific look, eg, Lady Gaga, Kurt Cobain, Marilyn Manson, John Lennon, etc! You could also make up something completely original and dress up as some ghoul, monster or even fairy if you don't like the scary side of Halloween that you can create on your own out of your own mind!
