HUMAN RIGHTS DAY
December 10th is a special day. It marks a celebration of Human Rights through the whole world. It is celebrated annually and it is called Human Rights Day. But, what is the history behind it?
This day was chosen to honour United Nations General Assembly's adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the first global enunciation of human rights, which happened on 10th of December 1948 in Paris.
As a one way to celebrate this day, there are many both high-level political conferences and meetings and cultural events and exhibitions dealing with human rights issues, where are also given two quite famous awards: United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights and Nobel Peace Prize. Many governmental and nongovernmental organizations active in the human rights field also schedule special events to commemorate the day, as do many civil and social-cause organizations.
The body that works to promote and protect the human rights, that are guaranteed under international law and stipulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, is the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is Navanethem Pillay.
Following a year of protest in many countries, from Tunisia to Cairo and all the way to the Occupy movement, the theme of 2011 recognized the significance of social media and technology in assisting human rights defenders in new ways.
