The Stardoll View: Party Chats

54 måneder siden

Welcome to this new segment on Stardoll, the Stardoll View. Here, StarBloggers AllDolledUp, Kage, and myself will be commenting on a variety of social topics that have influenced us sporadically during our time on Stardoll.

This post will be discussing some of the intricacies, pros, and cons of parties here on Stardoll. Parties have been an integral part of Stardoll for years. They’re a spot to meet up with a group of friends and discuss anything and everything. They have games you can play either for fun or to complete Academy assignments. Chat rooms can be many things, and can have many benefits and disadvantages attached to them.

Pros:

  • You can chat with multiple dolls

  • Chats are the perfect place to showcase new designs and clothes

  • You can campaign for multiple different contests, including Party Planner

  • There are lots of chat rooms to choose from

  • Parties provide perfect photo ops

  • You can meet new people in every chat, and even visit different countries

  • You can make private chat rooms for specific events

  • There's some awesome emoticons available

Cons:

  • Only 15 people can join a chat at any one time

  • The lag

  • The inappropriate language censor can revoke speaking privileges for 3 minutes when you don’t even swear

  • The lag

  • Chats don’t always load correctly

  • The lag

  • When they’re full, they’re full; whoever gets in first gets to stay

  • There aren’t always enough chats open

  • Some chat rooms can be more expensive, or may require a membership to create

  • Games can be complicated, not always working correctly or with controversial results

  • People tend to hog the front of chats and don’t always actually chat

All of you at one point or another have probably visited a chatroom here on Stardoll. I think of the three of us working on this blog, I visit parties the most. Whether I’m dressing up in Pink on Wednesdays or going around with a cowboy hat, there's always something interesting to do at parties. Now that I’m no longer a Superstar or Royalty, I’ve found that designing doesn’t always help to distract me. Going out and meeting random strangers and connecting over the little things is distracting. I once had an entire conversation in Spanish in a random Colombian chat room about how frustrating English can be as a language.

There are so many different people with different backgrounds, and chat rooms full of distinguished, interesting, and unique dolls have inspired a great many of my blogs.

Although chat rooms do have many beneficial aspects, there are some disadvantages that have plagued me time and time again.

To begin, lag. Glitches. Connection Errors. Disconnection. When chats don’t work, they can be extremely frustrating. It’s hard to connect with friends when the platform won’t load. I can’t even count the number of parties I’ve been to that have been cut short due to connection issues.

Another issue? Trolls. People can be genuinely mean. Not only are there inappropriate designs occasionally showcased in chat rooms, but people make new dolls and fake accounts just to troll around and be rude. I’ve gotten into plenty of tiffs with cyberbullies, finding myself having to defend myself and younger players who don’t always understand why they’re being targeted. As fun as chatting can be, if parties are being abused and used for bullying, they can quickly spiral and hurt feelings. I’ve gotten triggered plenty of times, and I’m sure I’ve triggered people in return.

I remember visiting one chat room only to find it full of Turkish members. I sat there trying to communicate with them for 15 minutes, and all I learned was “seni seviyorum” and “merhaba” along with 1 bad phrase that was directed at me for not speaking Turkish. In another chat room, a bunch of us realized we all spoke Spanish so we all started gossipping about Stardoll’s future in Spanish as the 1 non-Spanish-speaking guy in the room decided to sit there and look pretty because he had no idea what was being said.

In one of my favorite chats, I ran into 2 dolls who happened to look like aliens, like me, and we attempted to convince the entire chat that we were all from space. We also shared that the Earth was actually flat, something that only a real space alien would know.

I go to chats all the time, I meet tons of people, and I have fun. Not everyone utilizes this feature of stardoll nearly as much as I do. Here’s what Kage and ADU had to say on the topic:

Kage: The whole concept of being able to virtually chat in real-time, doll to doll, and meet lots of new people was amazing. You could take pictures with others, strangers or friends, play games, show off your trivia skills and get a score nobody really cared about but you were still happy if you won. But the enthusiasm was short-lived for me. The lag is unbearable and playing those childhood games can lead to your Flash player to crash. The rooms can often fill up but unlike in the past, if it fills up once it stays like that forever. You can’t join anymore even if the room is completely empty. You often glitch, can’t connect, the filter is giving you constant mutes if you’re speaking English and especially not, and I don’t want to get further into the harassing chat owners and their fellow gossipers that can put you down for stupid things. And yet, public chats have been game changers for those that met really good Stardoll friends and had tons of fun memories. On another note, for the love of all the saint, please fix the glitches.

AllDolledUp: The Good: The only place on Stardoll where we are able to gather and congregate our multilayered pixel paper dolls and take selfies! I will admit its possible to meet some like minded people if they are friendly. Playing games and good conversation can be worth it.

The Bad: Laggy! I stay away from party chats due to their time consuming nature, and its not really what I come to this game for. I am much more interested in designing and blogging. Sometimes people hardly say anything, or murmur in another language, and makes me long for the possibility to suite chat with multiple friends and take selfies in my suite.

The Ugly: Questionable behavior from creepy members that treat party chats like it is a dating site, or worse, IMVU.

I hope you've enjoyed reading this segment of The Stardoll View! What are your thoughts on parties? Worth it? Or a headache?
